Our basic research is centered on the William & Celia Ann Cody Moody family. William and Celia were originally from Tennessee but by 1850 had moved to Washington County, Missouri. By the 1850 census their oldest son, Henry Moody (b-1830), had taken a wife, Elizabeth (b-1833). Then by October of 1857 the family had moved again, this time to Kaufman County, Texas. That autumn month in '57 the two next oldest boys, Hickman Moody and James Moody, each married local Texan girls and ultimately lived next door to one another.

The Moody boys were supporters of the Union cause. Some have even said they were abolitionists. Perhaps so, because in 1863 they did what few in Texas did. Texas, as a state within the Confederacy, was at war with the federal union, and yet the three Moody boys left their homes and families in Texas and went north to Fort Gibson, Indian Territory and there joined the 14th Kansas Cavalry (USA). Almost immediately however, the middle son, Hickman, contracted small pox and died in October of 1863 leaving his young wife, Mary Louise Andrews Moody, a widow.

During the war a young man by the name of Francis Marion Vaughan enters the picture. While it is possible that Francis, who had been born in Arkansas, became acquainted with the Moody brothers prior to the war, what seems more likely is that their friendship developed during their war service. No matter, many years after the war, Vaughan married the next-to-the-youngest Moody sister, Rebecca. The Vaughans had at least three kids: George, James and Lucy.

What made F M Vaughan unusual in the Moody family is that he alone among the brothers-in-law had fought for the Union cause during the War Between the States.

The other Moody sisters married men who fought for the Confederate side. Molly Louisa Moody married Jesse LaFayette Jones, a young man of some means. Jesse enlisted in Lane's 1st regiment of Partisan Rangers (CSA). Sarah Moody married Elizamond Metcalf who had served in the Texas cavalry (CSA). The youngest sister, Lucinda, married Elizamond's brother James H Metcalf. He, too, served in the Texas cavalry (CSA).
